"Michigan gambling regulators have banned Sharwon Dosky from ever visiting a Detroit casino.

The ban on the man from this Detroit suburb is the first issued by the Michigan Gaming Control Commission.

If caught at a casino, Dosky would face 30 days in jail or a $50 fine.

"This person's presence at a casino would undermine and adversely affect the public trust in the integrity of gaming in the state," said Nelson Westrin, the gambling board's executive director.

Dosky does not have a listed telephone number and could not be reached for comment.

He was barred because of convictions for crimes at casinos in other states, tax evasion and his "reputation and conduct," the board said. It did not identify the type or location of the crimes.

Dosky does not have a criminal record in Michigan. He can challenge the ban.

The exclusion list is patterned after similar bans in Missouri and Nevada.

Michigan soon will announce a voluntary exclusion list of people who ask to be barred because they are compulsive gamblers. People who break the agreement to stay away from Detroit casinos could face a $1,000 fine or a year in prison.
People on both lists can have any gambling winnings taken away."

I imagine that he can still play online, and maybe in casinos in other states where there is no list! I wonder if the banned list is used by all other casinos, as well?

I wouldn't see how the casino would know him, if he used cash to play, and didn't cause a disturbance (which obviously he has). Maybe there is identification required to cash in a large jackpot? I'm not sure about that, haven't won one! There isn't any required for slots I believe, or at least none in Nevada. Interesting question I think!

Then again, if he's got a bad reputation and other offences that haven't been commented upon, perhaps it's best he wasn't in casinos?

Unless he was just too good and the owner didn't want to lose any more Wink

I'm sure he can still play online, just not the same though is it?

It would be interesting to know what the story is, was he a big winner, did he drink too much and throw things... Very Happy Or did he just act generally obnoxious! I would imagine, however, that it was much more serious than that. Sounds like the IRS agents caught him winning...tax evasion..although I thought you couldn't even collect until the government was paid.

I'm not sure how the tax works, although tax evasion is quite often the easy way of getting people as I'm sure a lot of the winners don't declare everything Wink

I would imagine it wasn't overly serious as the guy isn't facing charges (as far as we know) although it's enough to upset the casino owners so perhaps he was just an obnoxious winner.

Then too, the tax laws allow you to deduct your losses from your winnings, over a certain amount..no charges filed, as you say, not even public intoxication or resisting arrest! Sounds like a personal dislike for some reason.

That isn't too bad then - imagine a bad gambling addict could end up paying more in tax than he takes home in winnings!

I guess those are the American terms then - We have Drunk and Disorderly instead of public intoxication, but I think I prefer your phrase. Perhaps us Brits are generally too stupid to know what intoxicated meant Wink

Well, there's also disorderly conduct, which could mean about anything from throwing a drink to your cards to shoving the dealer... Very Happy

Ahh, the old chestnut - I think we have something along the lines of "Disturbing the peace", which is again anything causing a disruption... which includes throwing cards, drinks, shouting abuse and so forth. Over here it's used to catch anyone misbehaving without doing anything particularly bad.

disorderly conduct is a catchall..depends on what kind of mood the officer(s) are in at that particular time. They just might not like the way you look. Strangely enough, haven't heard of anyone else being put on a banned list, Michigan or otherwise. I doubt if it it happens in Vegas.

I suppose there are plenty of players who are ejected and unwelcome to return, although not publicised.

There are probably lists of people handed around among casino owners on who to watch out for and so forth. I know that here, all the shops have lists of known shoplifters, so I'm sure that anyone who is guilty of any misconduct is blacklisted.

Oh definitely, players are ejected for anything from cheating to being unpleasant characters. Personally, I hate unpleasant characters nearly as much as cheats, so if he was abusive, loud and put players off their games then he deserves it.

Then again, he might just have been a little *too* lucky for the casino owners liking, though I'm sure they'd never remove a player and blacklist them for winning too much... would they?...

I'm sure they would! Think about it, they know the odds of someone winning and if someone is winning too much over the odds then they are likely to be cheating or... maybe they were just born very lucky!

Agreed on the shitty characters though, if theres one thing I can't stand it's drunks and loud-mouths putting good people off their game.

Unfortunately, the amount those kinds of people throw away in casinos is enough to make the owners consider letting them in. Nobody likes a drunk and destroying the reputation of your casino, but if they keep the noise down, don't make a scene and spend a fortune on chips and drinks, then who's going to want to ban them?
