I'd like to see people's thoughts on this. You just sat down at a table, and all players are unfamiliar to you. It's the lowest limit available.
Which cards do you call raises with? And which do you re-raise with. Which would you cap with?
I have a few specific scenarios:
1) UTG raises, you are to the right of the button.
1.1) Lots of people in between call.
1.2) Most people between fold.
2) You're still in late position. The person to your right raises.
2.1) There were lots of callers before the raise.
2.2) There were few calls before the raise.
3) You are UTG+1, UTG raises.
4) The above late position scenarios but you are SB or BB. Do you add or remove hands? Which and why?
Please post more exact hands than "any decent hand". Like: AA-TT, AKs-ATs, KQs-T9s, KJs-QTs, AKo, AQo.
Lee Jones has a list that works decent, but I'd like to get more input. Especially if you can explain _why_ you call, raise or fold specific hands. It would also be interesting to hear which 'good looking hands' you'd fold to a raise that you think many people erroneously call with. |

1) UTG raises, you are to the right of the button.
1.1) Lots of people in between call. - I call with any good drawing hand - suited connecters as low as 4-5... call any pocket pair... raise with any pair of Qs or better...and raise with A-K suited or not. I also would probably call with K-J, and Q-10 (putting the early raiser on A-something)
1.2) Most people between fold. - I only call with top notch hands... A-Q or better, pocket Qs or better - no drawing hands... re-raise with pocket Ks, As, or AK
2) You're still in late position. The person to your right raises.
2.1) There were lots of callers before the raise. - similar answer to 1.1 above... but I will loosen my standards slightly on what I will re-raise with... the raiser was in a position to raise with a weaker hand...
2.2) There were few calls before the raise. - same as 1.2 above... fewer people in the pot... don't play drawing hands...
3) You are UTG+1, UTG raises. - only play absolutly primo hands... A-J or better call... but (with A-J, be careful after the flop)... call with pocket Jacks or better... but again... be careful with the pocket jacks on flop... and re-raise with kings, aces, or big slick...
4) The above late position scenarios but you are SB or BB. Do you add or remove hands? Which and why?
SB - early position raiser... many callers... same standards...but I'll re-raise less often with primo hands to disquise my hand (I will re-raise Aces every time to thin the field), and I'll call with more suited 1-gappers (J-9, Q-10, etc)
SB - early raiser... no callers... only call with primo hands... re-raise with top 3 hands... (if my experience with the raise says he raises with hands he shouldn't - any ace... any two face cards... I seriously consider re-raising him with two high face cards... or Axsuited... Axsuited is a drawing hand I like to play against many opponents, but pushing back against an aggressor and hitting the nut flush can pay off just as well as the multiwaypots...
all of the rest of my answers will be similar for similar situations... except for the following exceptions from the BB
BB - with many having already called a raise... I play drawing hands... including some suited one gappers... with few in the pot... I play only top notch hands... and if there's already been a raise, I'll thin the field if needed with aces... but disquise them by only calling if one or two in the pot...
I'll use the blinds to disguise strong hands against a moderate number of callers... If I need to thin the field, I'll re-raise... if there are already very few in the pot... I'll also re-raise to build the pot if I have A-Q, A-K, KK, or AA |
