MGM Grand Plan for Casino OK'd
14 December 2005
MICHIGAN -- As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "The Michigan Gaming Control Board gave unanimous approval Tuesday to MGM Grand Detroit casino's plans for a permanent hotel/casino structure.
"Approval of the plan, which included few details, was a formality. Construction has been under way for weeks. Phyllis James, senior vice president and senior counsel for MGM Mirage, the parent company, said final budget and design have not been approved.
"As previously reported, the company plans to build an entirely new casino with 100,000 square feet and add a 17-story hotel with 401 rooms, a pool and spa, according to plans submitted to the city in 2002..." |

| Hi, I just joined this forum from Texas. It is interesting that MGM Grand has expanded into Michigan, but I believe its success is guaranteed. The MGM Grand and the Mirage are both owned by Steve Wynn, a highly successful Las Vegas entrepreneur. He also has the Bellagio in Vegas. His casinos and hotels are spectacular. Casino gambling will continue to grow in Michigan. Of course, if some of the casinos offer tournaments for amateur poker players to enter, this will give them the opportunity to buy in to the bigger tournaments. Perhaps some do already? It would be good information to have, at least for the poker players in Michigan to consider. |

Yeah they have some huge developments, always prided themselves on being bigger and better.
I would bet that I wouldn't be able to afford a trip to the hotel though, never mind with a nice wad of cash to take to the casino. |

| I imagine that when the MGM Grand is completed in Michigan there will be lots of attractive packages offered, to include travel, hotel, dining, and casino incentives. For example, packages to the Vegas casinos are frequent and very reasonable, even though many people go there on a regular basis and pay whatever the rates may be. They will want to stir up business in Michigan as quickly as possible. |

Oh definitely, it's already stated that they plan to build hotel complexes and bolt on as many luxary additions as possible.
They'll probably offer casino weekends and so forth starting in the four-figure bracket, which is unfortunately a little too rich for my blood. |

| Four-figure packages are definitely way out of my budget too! I was thinking more along the lines of three-figures which we often see for packages to Las Vegas and even Reno Nevada. However, they are not as far from Texas either. Their packages usually include airfare, as well, so there are some good deals out there. Hopefully, Michigan will do the same..we'll see! |

Well they won't price the packages out of too many peoples reaches... they'll just rely on the casino to supplement cut-price airfares and hotel rooms!
Big cities, bigger casinos, glitzy nightlife and plenty of people going there hoping never to have to return to their old lives. Then you get plenty of punters who are just going out there to say they went to America and hit the big casinos. I'd love to try my luck someday although I wouldn't want to go in there with chump change |

| Now, I'm wondering if there are casinos in the UK, Europe, and other countries, as well? I'm not even sure there are any in South America, but I would suppose there may be.. |

Not sure about Europe, I would imagine so, but there are a few in the UK. Not of the scale of American casinos, I'm talking 20 slots and 3 or 4 tables.
They aren't big here, yet, although there is plans for a "supercasino" in Glasgow. Residents aren't happy about it being built, worried everyone is going to become gambling addicts, though it is a major development and would definitely earn the City a fair revenue. |

Yeah, it's amazing the number of people and the amount of money going through casinos across the globe. Some places have fewer casinos, and of course some religions don't approve of gambling so they aren't so popular everywhere.
True enough though, the US, Europe and even the UK are getting in on the act. |

| Sure are, I heard theres a couple in Scotland being planned that have faced some serious opposition? I suppose it's because it's not known as a gambling culture over there, whereas casinos are just part of the landscape in a lot of states now. |

Yes and locals aren't impressed! I don't see the problem personally, if people want to gamble they can gamble online or they can gamble in a casino. One way or another they will play cards!
As far as I know they are still going ahead albeit progress is slow due to the number of petitions against it. |

| True enough I suppose. It's the same logic that can be applied here - if people want to gamble they will, but you know, people are scaremongering and linking the presence of a casino with people becomming addicted and going broke! |
